Limiting a Search
Title, Journal Title, Keyword and Guided Keyword searches can be limited by Year, Language and Item Type. Author and Call Number searches cannot be limited.
To limit a search:
-
Select a search type that can be limited and click the
button on the search screen. The Select Search Limits page will display. -
Use the form to select the limits you want to apply to your search.
-
You may choose more than one limit type, and may make more than one selection within each type. To make multiple selections, hold down the Ctrl key (the Command key on Macintoshes) while clicking on your selections with the mouse.
-
To limit your search by Year, type the year in the date text box in the format YYYY. Then click the appropriate radio button for the date range that you want to find. For example, to find all texts published before 1850, type 1850 in the text box, and then click the radio button next to the less than symbol (<).
-
To limit your search by Language or Item Type, click on the appropriate pull-down list and select the limiting criteria.
-
To jump to a specific section of a pull-down list without scrolling, simply type the first letter of your choice, and the appropriate section will be displayed. For example, if you click on the pull-down list for Language, and then type J, the list will jump to Japanese.
-
To accept the limits, click the Set Limits button. To clear your selections, click the
button at the bottom of the page. -
Search limits remain in effect until you click the
button, or until you close your browser.
Note: Author and Call Number searches cannot be limited. However, if you have set limits and then execute one of these types of searches, the system will display the message "Search limits are in effect," but limits will not be applied to the search.
